Travel Photo of the week 3Mar11

This was taken in Cambodia on the road from the temples of Angkor Wat to Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in all of Southeast Asia. I had spotted a lotus field that was in full bloom and urged our driver to stop to take some photographs. After several minutes of traipsing across the irrigation dams of the beautiful lotus field, I began to return to the vehicle. It was then that I ran across this little Cambodian cutie. She was selling lotus seed pods on behalf of her family. There was no way I could have resisted buying a seed pod or not shooting a portrait of the little girl. Her mother seemed quite pleased at her daughter’s natural salesmanship and was quite grateful for the sale. Interacting with the little girl and her mother, getting a great portrait, and having a snack of lotus seeds for the rest of our journey are the unexpected enriching experiences of travel. Cambodia has been through decades of horrors, but the kingdom of wonder is coming into its own, rapidly becoming a world class destination. Their future seems bright, lets hope that it stays that way for this little girl and many more like her in Cambodia.
