This photo was taken in 2007 in a small town in Nicaragua of our driver’s neighbor, an old blind grandfather. His son was so proud of his father and was happy to share and translate his stories from Spanish to me. He was, among many other great things, a veteran of the Viet Nam War fighting for the U.S. Army. His weathered face read like a road map of the many adventures of his life, and although his eyes are no longer functional, reflected a wisdom gained from decades of experience.
The man and his family were proud to have their photo taken and to have someone interested in their story. Of many great memories of that trip to Nicaragua this one is my favorite, connecting and sharing with a family in a remote town and getting a great portrait of the old gentleman to remind me of that moment in time.
